The Greens Movement of Romania supports Budapest Gay Pride
and is asking the Hungarian authorities to allow it to be held.

Gay Parade Bucharest

The Greens Movement of Romania took note with concern about the decision of the Budapest authorities prohibiting the LGBT Pride March to be held on 18th of June 2011. We believe that this decision is undemocratic and contrary to the freedom values of the European Union, and is unacceptable from the authorities of a State which temporarily holds the EU presidency.

We firmly ask the authorities in Budapest to allow the Gay Pride to be held in order to restore the right of the citizens to demonstrate peacefully. The Greens Movement joins The Hungarian Democratic Green Party, LPM, other Hungarian democratic parties and other European Greens actively supporting LGBT demonstration and promoting diversity and freedom of expresion.

Discrimination and intolerance of sexual preferences is still a widespread phenomenon, especially in countries with immature and fragile democracies. Therefore, civic and political support of a Gay Pride event is very important.

The Greens Movement is a vigorous defender of LGBT rights and it will participate in the Bucharest Gay Pride March. Last year, Remus Cernea, currently Co-president of the Greens Movement, was the first Romanian politician who has ever participated in Bucharest Gay Parade. Also, for his work in civil society or to protect the rights of LGBT people as President of Romanian Humanist Association, Mr. Cernea was awarded with 2009 Rainbow Humanist Award of The Nordic Rainbow Humanists.

Because his former party was opposing his publicly exposed support for LGBT rights, secularism and the rights of national minorities, Mr. Cernea together with Claudiu Crăciun, Oana Tănase, Cezar Maroti, Horaţiu Ionescu and other young green politicians, have decided tot form a new political movement witch fully embraces the principles and vision set by the Charter of the European Greens.

Unfortunately, the Romanian Government recently rejected a project that would have recognized civil partnerships for heterosexual and homosexual couples. Greens Movement which is aiming the entry in the Romanian Parliament in 2012, is continuing the political struggle for LGBT rights.
